TL;DR: Nursery and LKG admission age in Bengaluru for 2027-28 follows a widely published pattern: Glendale India’s admissions guide of March 2026 lists minimum ages of 3 for Nursery, 4 for LKG, 5 for UKG and 6 for Class 1[1]. Published guides disagree on the date that age is measured, citing 31 March, 1 April or around 1 June, and the research for this guide found no Karnataka government order fixing a single 2027-28 cut-off. Parents should get each Bengaluru school’s cut-off date in writing before checking a birth date against any age table. A birth certificate, address proof and passport-sized photographs form the core of the commonly requested document set.
What age must a child reach for Nursery, LKG and UKG in Bengaluru?
The most consistent figures across published admission guides are 3 years for Nursery, 4 for LKG and 5 for UKG, which lines up with Class 1 at 6. Glendale India’s table was written for CBSE schools in Hyderabad and the 2026-27 cycle, so it shows the general pattern, not a Bengaluru rule. Bengaluru publishers describe wider bands: Chrysalis Kids, a Bengaluru preschool, puts Nursery at 2.5 to 3.5 years, LKG at 3.5 to 4.5 years and UKG at 4.5 to 5.5 years[2] in a guide dated May 2025.
Use the table below as an age-only check: date-of-birth windows depend on the cut-off date each school sets.
| Stage | Most consistent minimum age | Wider band some schools publish | Confirm with the school |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nursery | 3 years | 2.5 to 3.5 years; some schools add a pre-nursery or “Nursery I” level from 2+ | Which level the school calls Nursery, and its cut-off date |
| LKG | 4 years | 3.5 to 4.5 years | The cut-off date, and whether 3.5 is accepted |
| UKG | 5 years | 4.5 to 5.5 years | Whether a child from another preschool needs a progress report |
| Class 1 | 6 years | Karnataka relaxed this to 5.5 years for 2025-26 and by 60 days (5 years 10 months) for 2026-27 | The rule that applies in AY 2027-28 |
The gaps between sources are real. GIIS Bangalore’s guide of June 2025 gives 3 and above for Nursery and 3.5 and above for LKG, only six months apart, and tells parents to check each school’s specific criteria. Board labels do not settle the question either: preschool guides describe CBSE schools as generally following 3, 4 and 5 years, and none of them cites a board document for it.
The cut-off date varies by school, and it decides the class
Three published sources give three different answers.
- Cut-off date
- the date on which a school measures a child’s age for admission to a given class in a given academic year.
Delhi Public School Durgapur, one of the few schools with a published 2027-28 table, places LKG at 4+ as on 31 March 2027, for children born between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023[3]. An undated guide by My School Admission describes 1 April of the admission year as the usual measure, while 21K School’s guide, last updated in July 2026, says the age must be completed before the academic year starts, usually 1 June. None of the three is a Karnataka government source, and the Durgapur dates are that school’s own policy, not Bengaluru’s.
This guide prints no Bengaluru date-of-birth table for that reason. Research for it found no Karnataka Department of School Education order setting a 2027-28 cut-off for Nursery, LKG or UKG, and a table built on a borrowed date would mislead parents.
Take a child born on 15 April 2023. At a school measuring age on 31 March 2027, that child is 3 years and 11 months old and joins the Nursery year. A school measuring on 1 June 2027 counts the same child as 4 and eligible for LKG. Two months’ difference in the cut-off moves this child by a full school year, which is why 21K School lists confusion over cut-off dates and late birthdays among the recurring problems parents face.
Ask each school one question, and ask for the answer in writing: on what date is my child’s age measured for AY 2027-28?
How does Nursery entry age carry forward to Class 1?
Entry age at Nursery sets the age at Class 1, because each pre-primary year follows the last. 21K School’s guide describes the National Education Policy 2020 as setting the minimum age for Class 1 at 6 years, with a foundational stage covering ages 3 to 8[4], and as not naming a specific age for LKG. That silence on LKG leaves room for state and school variation. Counting back from 6 gives the 3, 4 and 5 pattern in the table above.
Karnataka’s Class 1 rule has changed year to year. An undated guide by My School Admission reports that Karnataka allowed Class 1 entry at 5.5 years for 2025-26[5]. For 2026-27, School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced a two-month relaxation in March 2026, admitting children aged five years and ten months, EducationWorld reported. No 2027-28 rule had been announced at the time of writing, so confirm the Class 1 rule with the school or the state education department before planning a Nursery or LKG start.
A child whose birthday falls just after a school’s cut-off has two standard routes, according to 21K School: a pre-nursery year, or waiting for the next academic session. Neither route is a setback. Chrysalis Kids, itself a preschool operator, says an earlier start is not necessarily an advantage and depends on the child’s readiness and development, an opinion offered without research behind it. None of the published guides reviewed for this piece offers data on how children near the cut-off fare later, so readiness observed by parents and teachers remains the practical test.
Which documents do Nursery and LKG admissions ask for?
A birth certificate is the one document every guide treats as essential. My School Admission’s undated checklist lists the child’s original birth certificate, Aadhaar card if available, proof of residence, passport-sized photographs, vaccination records and a caste certificate where applicable[6]. These are commonly requested documents, not a Karnataka requirement, and each school publishes its own list.
-
Birth certificate. Schools use it to check age against the cut-off date, so the name and date of birth must match every other document. Keep the original and several copies.
-
Proof of residence. My School Admission names an electricity bill, water bill, passport, driving licence or registered rent agreement as accepted forms. Families who have just moved to Bengaluru should ask the school which of these it accepts.
-
Photographs and identity. Passport-sized photographs of the child are standard, and Glendale India’s checklist adds an Aadhaar copy and parent ID proof. Check the number and size of photographs the form asks for.
-
Health records. Vaccination records appear on some lists, and 21K School mentions a medical fitness certificate if needed. Bring the immunisation card to the first visit so nothing delays the file.
-
Later-stage papers. Transfer certificates and report cards apply to children moving from another school, not to a first Nursery admission. A child joining UKG from a different preschool should ask whether the new school wants a progress report.
Glentree Academy’s own document list is confirmed with the campus at enquiry, and this guide does not reproduce one.
Should you choose a nursery inside a K-10 school or a standalone preschool?
The choice turns on four things a parent can check on a visit: continuity into Grade 1, class size, screen use and teacher training. Published admission guides offer no evidence-based benchmarks for any of the four in Bengaluru, and they carry no figures on ratios, seats or fees, so what follows is practitioner advice and not data.
| Criterion | Nursery inside a school running to Grade 10 | Standalone preschool | Question to ask on the visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continuity into Grade 1 | The child usually moves up within the same school | A second admission, with its own age check, is needed at Class 1 | Is a Grade 1 place assured for children who complete UKG here? |
| Class size | Varies by school and by campus | Varies by centre | How many children are in a section, and how many adults are with them? |
| Screens | Depends on the school’s pre-primary policy | Depends on the centre’s policy | Are screens used in class, for what, and for how long each day? |
| Teacher training | Often shares induction and observation with the main school | Depends on the operator | What training do teachers get before taking a class, and who observes them? |
Continuity is the strongest argument for a nursery inside a larger school. Class 1 admission brings a second age check and a second round of documents, and a family that cleared both at Nursery avoids repeating them. A standalone preschool makes sense where the commute to a larger campus is too long for a three-year-old, or where parents want to delay the school decision.
Class size and screen use deserve a direct question, because neither shows up on a brochure. Ask to stand in a working classroom for ten minutes. What the children are holding tells a parent more than any policy document. Glentree Academy publishes no pre-primary class size, so ask the campus for the current section strength. On teacher training, Glentree inducts teachers into its Learning for Life (LFL) framework and follows the induction with training, mentoring and classroom observation.
When do 2027-28 applications open, and what happens at the interaction?
Start earlier than feels necessary. GIIS Bangalore’s guide of June 2025 suggests beginning research 9 to 12 months before admission, with applications at many popular preschools opening 6 to 8 months before the session[7]. 21K School places form release between November and January, varying by state and school. None of these sources gives a Bengaluru calendar for 2027-28, so each school’s own dates are the only reliable ones.
-
Shortlist and confirm the cut-off. Write each school’s age cut-off date for AY 2027-28 next to the child’s date of birth. Where the child misses the date, ask which level the child would join instead.
-
Visit the campus. Book a tour while classes are running, and take the four questions from the comparison table. Seeing a pre-primary classroom in session matters more than seeing the auditorium.
-
Prepare the file. Collect the birth certificate, address proof and photographs before the form opens. Glendale India’s guide lists incomplete documents and late applications among the common admission mistakes.
-
Attend the interaction. According to Glendale India’s guide, written for the 2026-27 cycle, nursery admission involves no formal test, and schools focus on age eligibility and interaction[8]. Expect an informal session with parents and child, not an exam.
-
Ask for the fee breakup before confirming. Request a written breakup covering registration, admission, tuition, activity, transport and annual charges. Fee amounts differ by campus and year, so compare the full annual figure and not the tuition line alone.
Glentree Academy’s pre-primary approach and how to book a visit
Glentree Academy is a group of three CBSE schools in Bengaluru, at Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road, with Pre-Primary covering Nursery to UKG. Pre-Primary at Glentree is Montessori- and Waldorf-informed. Montessori shows up as hands-on work, practical life activities and child choice, while the Waldorf influence brings stories, songs, art, movement, nature and a predictable daily rhythm. Readiness for Grade 1 is built step by step across the pre-primary years.
The Pre-Primary day runs from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Each campus has a nurse and an infirmary, CCTV in key areas and background verification of staff. Glentree is affiliated up to Grade X, and parents should confirm with each campus which grades it currently runs.
Admissions for AY 2027-28 are open. The process begins with an enquiry by walk-in, phone or the admissions page, followed by an orientation and a campus tour. For Pre-Primary, Glentree then holds a Milestone Mapping Session with parents and child, a conversation about the child’s history, interests and learning style, before closing formalities. Bring the child’s birth certificate to the first conversation and ask the campus to confirm Glentree’s cut-off date and document list for AY 2027-28. Fee questions go to the campus as well.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
- What is the age for Nursery admission in Bengaluru for 2027-28?
- Nursery admission age in Bengaluru is most consistently given as 3 years, measured on the cut-off date each school sets. Some Bengaluru preschools publish a wider band of 2.5 to 3.5 years, and some schools run a pre-nursery level from 2+. Confirm the school’s own cut-off date for 2027-28 before applying.
- How old should a child be for LKG in Karnataka?
- LKG age in Karnataka is generally taken as 4 years: 21K School’s guide, last updated in July 2026, puts the recommended LKG age at around 4 years, depending on state and board. Some schools admit from 3.5. Research for this guide found no Karnataka order naming an LKG age for 2027-28.
- Is the cut-off date 31 March or 1 June?
- The cut-off date for Nursery and LKG differs by school and state. Published guides cite 31 March, 1 April and around 1 June, and none is a Karnataka government source. A child born in April or May can land in different classes at different schools, so ask every school for its date in writing.
- Which documents are needed for Nursery admission?
- Nursery admission documents commonly include the child’s birth certificate, address proof, passport-sized photographs, an Aadhaar copy and parent ID proof. Vaccination records and a caste certificate are requested where relevant. Transfer certificates and report cards apply only to children moving from another school. Each school publishes its own list.
- Do schools hold an entrance test for Nursery or LKG?
- Nursery and LKG admissions generally involve no formal test. Schools look at age eligibility, seat availability and an informal interaction with parents and child. At Glentree Academy, the Pre-Primary step is a Milestone Mapping Session, a conversation about the child’s history, interests and learning style.
- My child misses the cut-off by a few weeks. What are the options?
- A child who misses the LKG cut-off by a few weeks can join the level below, often called Nursery or pre-nursery, or wait for the next academic session. Preschool operators themselves say an earlier start is not automatically an advantage, and that the outcome depends on the child’s readiness.
- Is a nursery inside a big school better than a standalone preschool?
- A nursery inside a school that runs to Grade 10 offers continuity, because the child avoids a second admission process at Class 1. Standalone preschools suit families who need a shorter commute or more time to decide. Compare both on class size, screen use and teacher training by visiting a working classroom.
