The best CBSE school in Bangalore is not one school. It is a shortlist of three or four schools that meet three tests:

  • they sit inside a commute you can sustain

  • they meet CBSE’s own published norms

  • one of them suits the child you actually have

Every “top 10 CBSE schools in Bangalore” list was compiled by someone who has not met your child and does not know where you live. The good news is that CBSE publishes hard numbers a parent can check in an afternoon, and almost nobody checks them.

TL;DR: Start with the corridor, not the city. Verify affiliation on CBSE’s SARAS directory, which also lists disaffiliated and closed schools. Then check four numbers on the school’s Mandatory Public Disclosure page:

  • pupil-teacher ratio, capped at 30:1 by Clause 5.4

  • teachers per section, set at 1.5

  • section strength, standard 40 with an absolute ceiling of 45

  • classroom floor area, one square metre per child

Compare total mandatory cost rather than headline tuition. Then visit three schools and talk to parents at the gate.

Start with the corridor, not the city

Bangalore is not one school market. It is five or six markets that barely overlap. A family in Whitefield, one on Sarjapur Road and one on Bannerghatta Road are choosing from almost entirely different sets of schools. A school 22 kilometres away across the Outer Ring Road at 7:30am is not a real option, however good it is.

Fix your corridor first. The main ones are:

  • Whitefield and the eastern IT belt

  • Sarjapur Road and the southeast

  • Bannerghatta Road and the south

  • Yelahanka and the north

  • Electronic City

The test is not the Sunday drive time. It is what time your child boards the bus and gets home, five days a week, for a decade. A child who boards at 6:50am and gets home at 4:40pm is doing a ten-hour day before homework starts.

Once the corridor is fixed, the realistic list usually drops to between six and twelve schools. Our corridor guides for Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road cover what is specific to each.

Verify CBSE affiliation on SARAS before a school enters your shortlist

CBSE publishes its affiliated schools directory through SARAS 7.0. You can search it by keyword, affiliation number, state, region and school level, and it has a separate category for disaffiliated and closed schools.

For every school, confirm three things:

  • The affiliation number matches what the school advertises.

  • The status field shows the school as active.

  • The school level covers the grades you need. Affiliation is granted up to a level: secondary runs to Grade 10 and senior secondary to Grade 12.

A school website saying “CBSE affiliated” is a claim. A SARAS record is a fact. Schools sometimes advertise an aspiration as though it were an approval, and that matters enormously to a parent enrolling a child in Nursery.

The four CBSE numbers every Bengaluru parent should check

  1. Pupil-teacher ratio, capped at 30:1. Clause 5.4 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018 says the ratio should not exceed 30:1. It is a school-level staffing measure, not a class size. Work it out yourself by dividing published total students by published total teachers.

  2. Teachers per section, at least 1.5. Clause 5.4 requires at least 1.5 teachers per section, excluding the principal, physical education teacher and counsellor. A school that meets 30:1 but fails this test is thin on subject specialists.

  3. Section strength, standard 40 and ceiling 45. CBSE’s July 2025 guidelines permit up to 45 per section only in exceptional cases, such as parental transfers, essential repeat students and critical medical conditions. The Board said no school shall admit more than 45 per section under any circumstances.

  4. Classroom floor area, one square metre per child. The 45-student permission requires a classroom of at least 500 square feet, and Clause 4.8 requires one square metre of built-up floor area per child. On your tour, ask how many children sit in the room you are standing in.

A school that can answer all four from memory is a school that tracks them.

Where to find these numbers without asking anyone

Every CBSE school must publish them on a page marked Mandatory Public Disclosure, under Clause 2.4.9 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws. CBSE reissued the requirement in January 2026 with a 15 February 2026 deadline. The page carries:

  • the staff list with qualifications

  • student strength

  • infrastructure details

  • the fee structure

Compliance is uneven, and that is itself a signal. A shortlisted school with no disclosure page, or one full of broken links and expired documents, is showing you how it handles obligations that do not bring in admissions. Our guide to CBSE school fees in Bangalore explains how to read the fee section of that page.

Check the Class 1 age rule before you fall in love with a school

Karnataka’s standing rule is that a child must have completed six years by 1 June of the academic year to join Class 1. It applies to government, aided and private schools alike.

The state has granted one-year relaxations in recent cycles, including a 60-day relaxation announced in March 2026 for 2026-27. These are announced late and are not guaranteed, so plan against the six-year rule. Our explainer on the Grade 1 age rule in Karnataka has the full history.

Compare total mandatory cost, not headline tuition

Fee comparisons go wrong in two ways:

  • They mix different figures. One school quotes tuition only, another tuition plus annual fees.

  • They mix mandatory and optional costs. Transport, after-school programmes and overnight trips are optional, while tuition, annual fees, books and uniform are not.

Compare the total mandatory cost for your child’s grade. Ask whether the school collects it upfront or bills through the year, and ask what the fee increase has been in each of the last three years. Karnataka publishes no cap, and The Federal reported increases of roughly 5 to 20 percent for 2026-27. The full fee breakdown covers this in detail.

Where the school stops matters more than where it starts

Senior secondary affiliation is granted stream by stream. Approval for Commerce is not approval for Science.

Ask three questions on every tour:

  1. What grade does this campus currently teach to?

  2. Which senior secondary streams are approved?

  3. What proportion of the Grade 10 cohort continues into Grade 11 here?

The last one is the honest number.

Why “number one in Bangalore” is the least useful filter

No government body, examination board or regulator ranks Bengaluru schools. Every ranking comes from a media group, an awards programme or a listings platform, each with its own criteria and, in some cases, commercial relationships with the schools it ranks. A school blog publishing a top 10 list with itself at number one is an advertisement.

Rankings cannot tell you whether a class teacher notices a quiet child, or whether the school calls you before a problem becomes a crisis. We look at how rankings are compiled in how to choose the school that suits your child.

The shortlist method, start to finish

  1. Fix the corridor. Draw a realistic commute boundary and delete everything outside it.

  2. Verify affiliation on SARAS. Check number, status and school level.

  3. Pull each Mandatory Public Disclosure. Work out the ratio, read the staff list, note section strength and check fees. This takes about fifteen minutes per school.

  4. Build a total mandatory cost column for your grade, then add the optional items you will use.

  5. Visit three schools on working days. Watch how staff speak to children when nobody is presenting.

  6. Talk to three current parents per school, ideally at the gate at dispersal.

  7. Apply to two or three. Popular entry grades fill early.

Where Glentree Academy fits

Glentree Academy runs three CBSE campuses in Bengaluru, at Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road. That means a family can settle the corridor question and the school question separately.

  • One curriculum across campuses. All three follow the Learning for Life curriculum, developed in-house and integrated with CBSE, and share one central academic, curriculum and teacher training team.

  • Moving within the city. A family that changes corridor can move campus through Inter-Glentree Transfer without the child switching academic model.

  • Smaller sections. Glentree caps sections at roughly 30 in higher grades and 25 in pre-primary, against CBSE’s standard of 40. That cap is what makes subject-level mentoring possible.

Each campus’s Mandatory Public Disclosure page lists its fees, staff and student strength. Read them the same way you read any other school’s.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the number one CBSE school in Bangalore?
There is no official number one, because no government body, examination board or regulator ranks CBSE schools in Bangalore. Online rankings come from media groups, awards programmes and listings platforms using their own criteria. A more useful question is which three or four schools inside your commute meet CBSE’s published norms, publish a complete Mandatory Public Disclosure, and suit your child. That list is different for every family.
How do I check whether a school is really CBSE-affiliated?
Search CBSE’s SARAS 7.0 directory by name or affiliation number. Confirm the number matches the school’s claim and check the status field, since SARAS also lists disaffiliated and closed schools. Check the school level too: secondary covers up to Grade 10 and senior secondary up to Grade 12, in approved streams only.
What is a good student-teacher ratio for a CBSE school?
Clause 5.4 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018 caps the pupil-teacher ratio at 30:1 and requires at least 1.5 teachers per section, excluding the principal, physical education teacher and counsellor. Treat 30:1 as a ceiling, not a target. Ratio is not the same as class size, so a school can meet 30:1 while running sections of 40. Divide published students by published teachers to check.
How many students can a CBSE school put in one class?
The standard is 40. CBSE’s July 2025 guidelines permit up to 45 in exceptional cases such as parental transfers, and no school may admit more than 45 under any circumstances. The permission requires a classroom of at least 500 square feet and one square metre of floor area per child under Clause 4.8. Some schools deliberately cap sections below 40.
Which area of Bangalore is best for schools?
The best area is the one you live in or can realistically commute from. Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Yelahanka and Electronic City all have established CBSE options. Choosing a school across the city usually fails on commute alone, so fix the corridor first and choose within it.
What should I ask on a school tour?
The four CBSE numbers: pupil-teacher ratio, teachers per section, section strength in your child’s grade, and classroom floor area.
What happens when a child falls behind in one subject, and who notices.
The total mandatory fee for the grade, and whether it is collected upfront or billed through the year.
The fee increase in each of the last three years.
What proportion of Grade 10 continues into Grade 11.
Ask to see an ordinary classroom, not the newest one.
Do board result percentages tell me anything useful?
Less than parents assume, especially for a child entering pre-primary. A high pass percentage can reflect strong teaching or a school that discourages weaker students from sitting under its name. Ask for the distribution rather than the toppers, and ask how many students sat the exam compared with the number who started Grade 9.
How many schools should I shortlist and visit?
Cut your corridor list to five to eight schools using SARAS and the disclosure numbers, which takes an evening. Visit three to five on working days, speak to three current parents at each, and apply to two or three.
