A CBSE school place in Bangalore is not a single number, and no government body or examination board publishes an official average for the city. That is the reason a parent researching CBSE school fees in Bangalore finds one website quoting Rs 85,000 a year, another quoting Rs 4 lakh, and a third quoting a monthly figure that cannot be compared with either. The only authoritative figure for any individual school is the fee structure that school publishes on its own Mandatory Public Disclosure page, which the Central Board of Secondary Education requires it to maintain. Everything else you read is an estimate made by someone who did not ask the school.
TL;DR: No official average CBSE school fee exists for Bangalore, which is why aggregator sites disagree with each other by a factor of four. Clause 2.4.9 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws requires every affiliated school to publish its fee structure on its own website, and CBSE reissued that mandate in January 2026 with a compliance deadline of 15 February 2026. Two schools quoting the same annual fee can differ by Rs 60,000 or more in what a parent actually pays, because transport, meals, uniform, books and trips sit outside the annual fee at some schools and inside it at others. At Glentree Academy, annual fees across the Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road campuses run from roughly Rs 1.15 lakh at the pre-primary stage to roughly Rs 1.9 lakh at Grade 10, with each campus priced differently. The useful question is not which school is cheapest, but what each fee actually buys.
There is no official average CBSE school fee for Bangalore, and that is why every website gives you a different number
Search for CBSE school fees in Bangalore and you will find figures that cannot all be true at once. One aggregator gives an annual range of Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,60,000. Another gives a monthly range of Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 for CBSE, which annualises to something quite different. An eight-year-old forum thread suggests Rs 80,000 to Rs 4 lakh.
None of these sources publishes a methodology, a sample size, or a date on which the underlying figures were collected. They are not lying. They are estimating, usually from a handful of schools, and then presenting the estimate as a market fact.
There is no Karnataka government dataset of private school fees, no CBSE-published average by city, and no regulator that collects and reports the number. The Right to Education framework and the UDISE+ school database do not publish comparable fee data for private unaided schools. When a source quotes an average, it has either surveyed a small sample or repeated another site that did.
This matters practically. A parent who budgets against an aggregator’s range and then walks into an admissions counsellor’s office can be Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 out on a single grade, which is enough to change a shortlist.
The one page that tells you a school’s real fee is its CBSE Mandatory Public Disclosure
Every CBSE-affiliated school is required to publish its fee structure on its own website. Clause 2.4.9 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018 requires each affiliated school to maintain a website carrying its affiliation status, infrastructure details, teacher details and qualifications, student numbers, contact details and copies of transfer certificates issued, and states that the website must also carry information on the fees charged.
CBSE reissued that requirement in January 2026. As reported by ArdorComm Media, the Board directed all affiliated schools to upload prescribed information in the revised Appendix IX format by 15 February 2026, under Clauses 2.3.8 and 2.4.9, covering affiliation status, infrastructure, fee structure, student strength, contact details and staff qualifications. CBSE stated that non-compliance would be treated as a violation of Clause 12.2.3 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws and may attract penalties under Chapter 12.
The disclosure is patchy in practice. An RTI response obtained by Careers360 and published in March 2022 found that of more than 26,000 CBSE-affiliated schools in India, mandatory disclosures were available on the board’s website for only around 9,000, and only 40 percent of those were fully complete against the norms.
So the practical instruction for a Bangalore parent is short. Go to the school’s own website, find the link marked Mandatory Public Disclosure, and read the fee structure there. Glentree Academy publishes one for each campus, at Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road. If a school does not publish one, that absence is itself information about how the school handles transparency.
What sits inside a CBSE school’s annual fee, and what sits outside it
Two Bangalore schools can quote an identical annual fee and cost a parent very different amounts over a year. The difference is almost never the tuition. It is which components the school folds into the headline number.
Components that are usually inside the annual fee at a Bengaluru CBSE school:
Tuition. The teaching cost, which is the largest single component and the only one that qualifies for the income tax deduction discussed further down.
Development or facility charges. Maintenance, laboratories, library, sports infrastructure and technology. Karnataka’s fee determination formula treats development cost as a defined proportion of staff salary rather than an arbitrary add-on.
Examination and assessment costs for internal assessments. Board registration and examination fees for Grade 10 are typically billed separately in the board year.
Co-scholastic and activity costs where the school runs art, music, physical education and library periods inside the timetable rather than as paid extras.
Components that are usually outside the annual fee and billed separately:
Transport. Charged by route distance, which means two families at the same school on the same grade pay different transport amounts. This is the largest and most commonly underestimated add-on.
Meals. Charged as a separate annual or termly subscription where the school runs a cafeteria, and skipped entirely by families who send a packed lunch.
Uniform and books. A first-year cost that is materially higher than the renewal cost in later years, because a new joiner buys the full kit.
Field trips and residential camps. Grade-dependent, and typically higher from the middle school years upward.
After-school programmes. Music, skating, sport and language classes that run beyond the school day, usually priced per activity. Glentree publishes its full after-school programme so parents can see what is on offer before they budget for it.
The honest way to compare two schools is to add the annual fee to the transport quote for your address, the meals subscription if you will use it, and the first-year uniform and book cost. That total is what you will actually pay. The headline fee on its own is not comparable across schools.
The one-time admission fee that most fee comparisons leave out
New joiners at many Bengaluru private schools pay a one-time admission fee in the year they enter. It is charged once, on entry, and is not repeated in later years.
Almost no aggregator listing includes it, because those listings are built around a single annual figure. A parent comparing two schools on annual fee alone can therefore be surprised by a first-year total that is meaningfully higher than the number they planned around.
At Glentree Academy, this one-time admission fee applies to new admissions at the Whitefield and Sarjapur Road campuses. It is a single entry cost rather than a recurring annual charge, and the Glentree admissions team states the current amount at the enquiry stage.
When you ask any school about fees, ask two questions rather than one. What is the annual fee for this grade, and what does a new joiner pay in year one that a continuing student does not.
Why the same grade costs different amounts at two campuses of the same school
Parents are often surprised that a school group charges different fees at different campuses for the same grade and the same curriculum. The reason is structural rather than commercial.
Land and construction cost differs sharply across Bengaluru. A campus on the Whitefield or Sarjapur Road corridor sits on land valued very differently from a campus on the southern edge of the city, and that cost flows through the fee. Teacher salary bands, which Karnataka’s fee formula ties development cost to directly, also vary by corridor.
Campus age matters too. A newer campus is still building enrolment across grades, so its fixed costs are spread across fewer students, which pushes some costs up and gives the school reason to price entry more accessibly to fill grades.
Glentree Academy runs three campuses in Bengaluru at Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road, following the same Learning for Life curriculum and the same central academic team, and they are priced differently for exactly these reasons. The curriculum a child receives is the same. The cost of delivering it in three parts of the city is not.
What Glentree Academy charges across its three Bengaluru campuses
Glentree Academy publishes fees as ranges here because the three campuses are priced differently and because the exact figure for any grade is reissued each academic year.
| Stage | Annual fee range across the three Glentree campuses |
|---|---|
| Nursery to UKG | Approximately Rs 1.15 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh |
| Grade 1 to Grade 5 | Approximately Rs 1.4 lakh to Rs 1.75 lakh |
| Grade 6 to Grade 10 | Approximately Rs 1.55 lakh to Rs 1.9 lakh |
Working through this for a specific grade? Each Glentree campus publishes its full fee structure, infrastructure details and staff qualifications on its Mandatory Public Disclosure page: Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road.
Within each band, the Bannerghatta Road campus sits at the lower end, the Whitefield campus at the upper end, and the Sarjapur Road campus between them.
What that fee covers at Glentree includes the Learning for Life curriculum and the school’s own LFL supplementary books, the Math Lab, the Earth Lab, the Montessori Lab in pre-primary, the R.E.A.D. programme, Computer Science and Coding, and the compulsory co-scholastic programme covering art, physical education, yoga and Taekwondo, all of which run inside the school timetable rather than as paid extras. If you want to understand what that looks like in a classroom rather than on a fee sheet, we have written separately about why the same concept gets taught several different ways and about what Learning for Life means in practice.
Class sizes are capped below what CBSE permits, at roughly 30 students in the higher grades and roughly 25 in pre-primary, which is a direct cost the school carries rather than a claim it makes.
Transport, meals, uniform, books, field trips and after-school programmes are billed separately. Families who use school transport and take part in an after-school activity get a doorstep drop after the activity ends at no additional transport charge, rather than a common drop point.
Glentree also runs a scholarship programme offering a tuition fee waiver to eligible students, so ask the campus admissions office whether your child qualifies before you finalise a budget.
The current, campus-specific and grade-specific fee schedule is issued by each campus admissions office and published on that campus’s Mandatory Public Disclosure page. Treat the ranges above as a planning figure and the campus schedule as the number.
Who actually decides how much a Bengaluru private school can charge
The short answer is that the school does, and the state intervenes only when someone complains.
Karnataka does not operate the model Tamil Nadu uses. As The Federal reported in April 2026, Tamil Nadu has a state-level committee constituted under the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Act 2009, headed by a retired High Court judge, which approves each school’s proposed fee before it can be charged, after which the approved fee holds for three years.
Karnataka works differently. The Federal reports that the state follows a fee determination formula under which a school fixes its fee by adding 30 to 35 percent of total staff salary, as development cost, to the tuition fee. District-level committees headed by Deputy Commissioners handle complaints, can examine audit reports, and can impose penalties on schools that charge beyond the formula.
The legal footing is contested. In January 2023 the Karnataka High Court declared Section 48 of the Karnataka Education Act 1983, which prohibited private unaided schools from collecting fees other than as prescribed by the state government, to be ultra vires. The Federal notes that court rulings holding that private schools may collect reasonable fees necessary to run the institution are among the reasons fee increases have gone unchecked.
The practical consequence for a parent is that annual increases are normal and are not capped by a published percentage. The Federal reported increases of roughly 5 to 20 percent across Karnataka private schools for the 2026-27 admissions cycle, with schools citing teacher salaries and maintenance costs. Ask any school what its fee increase has been over the last three years. A school that answers precisely is telling you something about how it will behave over the ten years your child is enrolled.
The tax relief on school fees that many Bengaluru parents forget to claim
The tuition component of school fees qualifies for a deduction, and the section number changed recently, which has caused confusion.
Deductions that Indian parents knew for decades as Section 80C of the Income-tax Act 1961 moved to Section 123 of the Income-tax Act 2025, with the eligible items listed in Schedule XV. The Income-tax Act 2025 commenced on 1 April 2026. The Central Board of Direct Taxes stated that the deduction limit remains clearly stated within the section while the schedule provides a breakdown of eligible deductions.
The substance did not change. The aggregate limit remains Rs 1.5 lakh per year across all eligible items, it covers tuition fees for up to two children in full-time education at an institution in India, and it is available only under the old tax regime.
Two points parents routinely get wrong. Only the tuition component qualifies, so development fees, transport charges and donations do not. And the Rs 1.5 lakh ceiling is shared with provident fund contributions, life insurance premiums and other eligible items, so a parent already close to the limit gains nothing further from the fee.
This is general information rather than tax advice, and the treatment depends on your own return. Confirm your position with a tax adviser before you rely on it.
How to compare two schools’ fees fairly in ten minutes
Open each school’s Mandatory Public Disclosure page and find the published fee structure. If the school does not have one, ask the admissions office for the current schedule in writing and note that the disclosure is missing.
Write down the annual fee for your child’s specific grade, not the school’s lowest grade. The gap between pre-primary and Grade 10 at the same school is commonly Rs 40,000 or more.
Get a transport quote for your actual address, not the school’s headline transport rate. Route distance changes the number materially.
Add the first-year costs separately. One-time admission fee where it applies, full uniform kit, and the complete book list. These fall away in year two, so keep them in a separate column rather than mixing them into the annual figure.
Ask what the fee increase has been in each of the last three years, and ask for it as a percentage. This tells you more about the next decade than the current year’s figure does.
Ask which activities sit inside the timetable and which are paid extras. A school with a lower headline fee that charges separately for art, music and sport can cost more over a year than a school that runs them inside the school day.
Fee is only one of the things worth comparing, and we have set out the rest in our guide to what to check before you put your child into a school.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the average cost of a CBSE school in Bangalore?
- There is no official average. No Karnataka government department, and not CBSE itself, publishes an aggregate fee figure for CBSE schools in Bangalore, which is why estimates online range from around Rs 85,000 a year to several lakh and cannot be reconciled with each other. The figures you see on aggregator sites are estimates drawn from small samples, usually without a stated methodology or collection date. The only reliable figure for any given school is the fee structure that school publishes on its own website under Mandatory Public Disclosure, which CBSE requires under Clause 2.4.9 of its Affiliation Bye-Laws. If you want a planning number for a shortlist, collect the published fee from each school on your list and add the transport quote for your address rather than relying on a city-wide average that does not exist.
- Where do I find a CBSE school’s official fee structure?
- On the school’s own website, under a link marked Mandatory Public Disclosure. CBSE requires every affiliated school to publish this, and reissued the requirement in January 2026 with a compliance deadline of 15 February 2026 for schools to update their disclosures in the revised Appendix IX format. The same page carries the school’s affiliation status, infrastructure details, student strength and teacher qualifications, so it is worth reading in full rather than only for the fee. Compliance is uneven. A Careers360 RTI response published in 2022 found disclosures available for only about 9,000 of more than 26,000 CBSE-affiliated schools nationally, and only 40 percent of those were complete. Glentree publishes a disclosure page for Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Bannerghatta Road. If a school you are considering has no disclosure page, ask for the fee schedule in writing.
- Are CBSE schools cheaper than ICSE schools in Bangalore?
- On average CBSE fees in Bengaluru sit below ICSE and well below IB and IGCSE, but the board is not what drives the difference. Curriculum materials, staffing ratios, campus land cost and how the school positions itself in the market account for far more of the gap than the syllabus does. A premium CBSE school in Whitefield can cost more than a mid-range ICSE school elsewhere in the city. Compare specific schools on the components discussed above rather than assuming a board-level discount. If you are weighing the boards themselves rather than the fees, our explainer on the CBSE two board exam model covers how CBSE assessment is changing.
- Does the annual fee include transport and meals?
- Usually not. At most Bengaluru CBSE schools, transport and meals are billed separately from the annual fee, and transport is priced by route distance so two families at the same school pay different amounts. Uniform, books, field trips and after-school programmes are also typically outside the annual fee. This is the single largest source of budgeting error for parents, because the headline fee is the number that appears in every comparison listing while the add-ons are the number that changes what you actually pay. At Glentree Academy, transport, meals, uniform, books, trips and after-school programmes are billed separately from the annual fee, while the curriculum programmes and compulsory co-scholastic activities run inside the school timetable at no extra cost.
- Is there a one-time admission fee, and is it refundable?
- Many Bengaluru private schools charge a one-time admission fee to new joiners in their entry year. It is charged once rather than annually, and it is normally non-refundable, which is why it should be planned as a first-year cost rather than folded into your annual budget. At Glentree Academy the one-time admission fee applies to new admissions at the Whitefield and Sarjapur Road campuses, and the admissions team confirms the current figure at enquiry stage. Ask any school for this figure explicitly, because aggregator listings almost never include it and a first-year total can therefore look very different from the annual fee you compared on.
- Can private schools in Karnataka increase fees every year?
- In practice yes, and there is no published percentage cap in force. Karnataka does not operate an approval-based system like Tamil Nadu’s, where a state committee headed by a retired High Court judge approves fees that then hold for three years. Karnataka instead uses a fee determination formula, reported by The Federal in April 2026 as tuition plus 30 to 35 percent of total staff salary as development cost, with district committees headed by Deputy Commissioners handling complaints after the fact. The legal position is contested, and in January 2023 the Karnataka High Court declared Section 48 of the Karnataka Education Act 1983, which barred private unaided schools from charging fees other than as prescribed by the state, to be ultra vires. The Federal reported increases of roughly 5 to 20 percent across Karnataka private schools for the 2026-27 cycle. Ask each school for its actual increase over the last three years.
- Can I claim school fees on my income tax return?
- The tuition component qualifies, subject to conditions. From 1 April 2026 the deduction that parents knew as Section 80C of the Income-tax Act 1961 sits at Section 123 of the Income-tax Act 2025, with eligible items listed in Schedule XV. The aggregate limit is unchanged at Rs 1.5 lakh a year, it applies to tuition fees for up to two children in full-time education at an institution in India, and it is available only under the old tax regime. Development fees, transport charges and donations do not qualify. The Rs 1.5 lakh ceiling is shared with provident fund contributions, insurance premiums and other eligible items, so parents already at the limit gain nothing further. This is general information and not tax advice, so confirm your own position with a tax adviser.
- What are Glentree Academy’s fees for 2027-28?
- Glentree Academy annual fees run from approximately Rs 1.15 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh at the pre-primary stage, approximately Rs 1.4 lakh to Rs 1.75 lakh for Grades 1 to 5, and approximately Rs 1.55 lakh to Rs 1.9 lakh for Grades 6 to 10, with the Bannerghatta Road campus at the lower end of each band, Whitefield at the upper end, and Sarjapur Road between them. New admissions at Whitefield and Sarjapur Road also pay a one-time admission fee in the entry year. Transport, meals, uniform, books, field trips and after-school programmes are billed separately, and a scholarship is available to eligible students. The exact figure for a specific grade at a specific campus is issued by that campus admissions office and published on its Mandatory Public Disclosure page, so contact the campus for the current schedule rather than budgeting from a range.
- Which CBSE school in Bangalore has the lowest fees?
- There is no meaningful answer to this question, because there is no published dataset ranking Bengaluru CBSE schools by fee and because the lowest headline fee is frequently not the lowest total cost. A school with a low annual fee that charges separately for art, music, sport, library and activities can cost a parent more across a year than a school with a higher fee that runs all of it inside the timetable. Budget CBSE options in Bengaluru do exist, particularly outside the eastern and southern IT corridors where land cost is lower. Build your shortlist on total annual outlay for your address and your child’s grade, then look at what each fee buys.
